I was called upon at about 10pm when this young man was rushed to the facility with bleeding and pain in the right shoulder. He was said to have been shot by what I suspect to be an Ak47 around the college of Education Gidan Waya.
Gidan Waya is notorious for crimes such as this. In the last 1 week I have had to managed 4 gun shot wounds from the community I am practicing. Some fatal, others not so.
On this occasion, the young man, a bike taxi rider, was on his way home through a lonely footpath and all of a sudden he had a loud sound and pain in his shoulder. He was unable to lift the hand, lost control and crashed his bike. He heard steps coming toward his direction and people speaking in hausa that they have got him. He mustered the energy left in him and ran. A couple of shots again rang out in the air but he had luckily dodged them.
We found an entry wound, shattered pieces of bones and a stuck bullet behind the shoulder. We removed the bullet and treated him.
At about 1am, I was again called upon. This time there was another young man who was bleeding with his guts in his hands. He had been shot in the abdomen not too far from where the hospital is. I had to refer him unfortunately because I had no assistant to carry out any operation on him.
The menace of proliferation of small arms and light weapons is becoming an epidemic and of public health concern in Nigeria. Many have lost their lives as result of this and there is every need for an urgent intervention in this regard. Gidan waya is notorious for this and it is only getting worse. The risk of working in neighborhoods like this can only be imagined.
The rural doctor initiative... Everyone deserves good health.
