Continued from yesterday. SHE CARRIES A BAG FOR FEACES. EPISODE 2 ( nothing happened, that phrase was just to keep you curious and anticipate this part of the story😁) In the theatre, all was ready. We had our suction machine which kept acting up, the drain was made out of a catheter tube and because they had no donor for blood, I had to donate mine, a rare privilege for me. We scrubbed and donned, like space travellers who were set for a journey. We prayed and after she had been cleaned and draped, we began the procedure. On opening the abdomen, pus alongside fecal matter poured out, we suctioned quite a quantity. We proceeded to find the perforation and luckily found it amidst a coiled up intestine matted together. Carefully and diligently we separated them until we reached it. We repaired, irrigated properly, passed the drain and closed up. She was wheeled to the recovery room and after some hours, to the ward. She was stable. The drain kept being active for a while. Our abdominal girth(circumferential measure) was lower than when she came in. Her electrolyte test and kidney test were perfect, she was making adequate urine and all. About the next day I kept hearing this yelling form a baby that wouldn't let down. I had to call on one of the attendants to ask whose it might be. I was told that it was her baby who hadn't had anything to eat since the surgery. He was hungry and momma couldn't feed him. He missed her. I encouraged them to take him to her to be breastfed. Such a handsome one there. He almost sucked the whole fluid from her system not minding what she was going through. 🤣 Day 5, we noticed something, the abdomen was distended, and lo and behold, yellowish to green substances started flowing out. They appeared to be fecal matter🤦♂️. I came in and saw it after my attention was drawn to it. I knew what had happened. She had had a wound breakdown. This means one thing. One thing alone….. Want to know what happened next? Follow us tomorrow. We love you. Chapter 1 : SHE CARRIES A BAG FOR FEACES Episode 3: Fecal diversion There is one of two things that could have happened: the repair had possibly failed and given way, or there has been another perforation elsewhere. We had to go back in. Each surgery costs 100k, with investigations. For the repeat, for her case, 80k. We entered and found out it was a break down. If we repaired again, there would be a risk of further breakdown so we opted for the best option given the circumstances. We pull an ileostomy, a procedure where fecal matter is diverted to allow for the gut to heal properly before permanent repair. Omies are done for several other causes, such as inflammatory bowel diseases, cancers, imperforate anus and a host of others. This is some 2 weeks after the procedure and our patient is hale and hearty being fed by friends and relatives and occasionally by staff. She is gradually having a positive spirit now and the child is growing at an unprecedented rate. He appears very healthy and handsome. She feeds him as often as she can.
She will need a final repair that will take place soon. Until then, on her behalf, you all know what we got to do for her. She would need roughly 300k for all the procedures and we are quite certain God will perfect what he has started. Reach out to me for her hospital bills and if you wish to help out for her personal upkeep, please be my guest. Last week, I talked to a friend about her case and she gave out 10k. We have used that for the purchase of some colostomy bags, about 4 of them, each costing about N3000. She would need at least 2 in a week. We are however, happy about one thing, that she is not in any form of emotional stress about her health and feeding. It is our belief that the facility will not have cases that will be beyond her capacity if God wills it. Thank you. We shall bring updates on her condition on a weekly basis as we prepare to discharge her home for weekly visits. God bless you all, and always remember, we love you all unimaginably. The rural doctor initiative… everyone deserves good health. See you next week for the next episode.
