We are proud to be celebrating the rural doctor INITIATIVE, RDI, an idea conceived 5 years ago and birthed only in 2020, as we majestically walk into 2021, today. The RDI was inspired by a genuine desire to impact the lives of rural dwellers who have been seemingly forgotten and neglected, forcing them to fend for their health needs by themselves. Over the years, the RDI has studied the health statistics in rural areas before, during and after its impact. These have drastically shown an impressive healthy improvement in the numbers. Through sheer commitment and passion, doctors and non-doctors alike, at the RDI, have continued to brainstorm on ways through which more rural dwellers would benefit from doctor-patients relationship that is obviously short of nothing but adequate. In 2019, the Nigerian medical association, NMA, made a spine chilling revelation of a pantry 40,000 doctors in an estimation population of 196million. WHO made a rather gloomy submission of 4 doctors to 10,000 people in Nigeria, bringing the rate to 1 is to 2,500 people, a far cry from the required 1 is to 600 by the same body. This ratio has no doubt contracted with the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020 and the constant brain drain of about 12 doctors per week as reported by a recent study. These ratios appear doleful and gloomy. This has, however, challenged the rural doctor initiative to conclude plans to work with like minds including individuals, government and nongovernmental organizations to, not only keep doctors within the country but also, attract them to the rural areas by improving on their welfare and renumeration. Therefore, as we step into 2021, we must remember that life, as we know it, has no meaning outside being our brother's keepers. As we, who are opportuned to be above average, wear the coat of optimism, it is our responsibility to put on the shoes of service to humanity to match. Lastly, I would like to cease this opportunity to appreciate all our social media friends and family who have supported us thus far. We do not take your loyalty for granted.
To our international partners, none of these would have been possible without your support both financially and morally. We will continue to work assiduously and judiciously with you until such a time when health care would have been what it ought to be naturally- accessible, affordable and available. Here is to achieving more and conquering new grounds and targets. Have yourselves a blissful new year. Thank you. Dr. Arome OKEME Founder, Rural Doctor Initiative… Everyone deserves good health.
