A major challenge we face in the rural practice is that of patients leaving against medical advice (LAMA). It is an epidemic soon to grow into massive proportions. Most times patients are brought in acutely ill through the A&E and as soon as intervention is instituted and patients appear a bit stable, their relatives begin to approach the health personnel for discharge! The causes are not far-fetched. Some do this because of the notion that long hospital stay is synonymous to parting with more money, even though that is not the case. Another possible reason could be the perception that long hospital stay means that patients, especially women, will not be at home to take care of the family. Some prefer to manage patients with local herbs, whereas others have apathy for the health clinics. Support the work of The Rural Doctor by DONATING to
