This young new mother complained of pain and swelling in the right breast that started 1 month after initiating breastfeeding.
On exam, we realized that she was febrile and had a tender, shiny redness around the upper, outer quadrant of the right breast. A needle aspiration test confirmed a collection of pus we refer to as an abscess. This is mostly as a result of mastitis, an inflammation of the breast tissue.
An abscess is usually seen in breastfeeding mothers and is mostly caused by a blocked milk duct and infections, mostly staph. Breast Abscess can also be seen in non breastfeeding women and men.
In this patient, we had to incise and drain quite a volume of pus and placed her under iv antibiotics. It was sent to the lab for culture and sensitivity. She improved after few weeks of management.
This, here, again emphasizes the need to ensure health professionals in rural areas managing conditions like this that normally would have been tampered with by quacks who occupy these vacuums at the expense of innocent patients seeking help.
The rural doctor initiative will continue to do its best to narrow the gap between resource poor settings and professional health care providers.
The rural doctor initiative…everyone deserves good health.
