I really do not know who to direct my anger at presently as regards the rate of accidents on the Abuja-Kaduna express road; the boss of FRSCN, Minister for transportation, PMB or the governor of Kaduna state. When James Ocholi died, over 7 FRSCN buses trooped down to doka, over 10 patrol vans and a retinue of escort vehicles were on ground. An emergency chopper ambulance landed here probably for the first time too. He was a more "superior" Nigerian. Today my day started quite early than usual as I responded to a distress call. I rushed to the facility and as usual some accident victims were receiving first aid from the secondary responders. The FRSCN boss pulled me aside and requested I accompanied them back to the site of the accident as the driver of the truck in the accident was still trapped inside the van that had lost control and got stuck in a ditch. Trapped there he was restless and kept pleading for water. I knew there was ongoing hemorrhage and subsequent dehydration but I was helpless as I couldn't reach him. He was still trapped. He begged and kept begging, I felt a pang of pain in my heart because I knew what was coming.
After several hours of trying to extricate him, we succeeded, pulled him out and found out he had an open fracture of the Left ankle and a deep avulsion of the calf muscles exposing the bones beneath. He wasn't bleeding any more because he had completely bled out over the hours that he had been trapped. He died before we could even commence first aid... The thing is, the common man dies everyday of causes that are preventable. If only there was the political will to proactively ensure that people who should not die of road traffic accidents don't then we wouldn't be losing lives like worthless flies.. Over the past past five days I have had 5 accident on this road and lost 8 of the victims. Today alone I have had to attend to 3 different accident cases. To the FRSC officers between Jere and Rijanna, God will reward you all. With the dearth of equipments you still give in your best while your bosses take the whole credit in abuja. Thank you again for today.
