Mr A, an 18 year old male, was rushed in through the emergency wing with a complain of severe left scrotal pain described as constricting and intermittent. He had vomited 3 times before presentation. We ran some investigation and imaging and concluded it was a case of testicular torsion and we needed to act fast to save the testis. Unfortunately, when we got there, the testis was not viable. It was black and cords twisted. We called the uncle and showed him the problem and asked that he discussed with his brother. We also got the young man to understand the condition. They signed another consent and we did the needful. The testis was sent for histology. He will still father kids with one testis. Not a problem at all. This surgery was done at an affordable cost. The parents and uncle wouldn't have been able to afford the cost in a tertiary facility, making need for rural doctors even more dire. The role of the rural doctor initiative cannot be overemphasized. Without the rural doctor close to the dwellers, these sort of intervention wouldn't have been possible.
Our doctors around the country are working hard to see that the health statistics in the rural area improves drastically within the next 2 years. The rural doctor initiative.... Everyone deserves good health.
